Easwaran’s classic manual on meditation and spiritual living is a unique source of practical spiritual support for new and experienced meditators.
Easwaran taught passage meditation for over forty years, and his class at the University of California, Berkeley was the first accredited course on meditation at any Western university. He is the author of the best-selling translation in English of the Bhagavad Gita, India’s best-known scripture.
In passage meditation, you focus attention on passages or texts from the world’s wisdom traditions that are positive, practical, and uplifting, and that fit with your own religious or non-religious beliefs. This universal method of meditation stays fresh and inspiring, prompting you to live out your highest ideals, and the mantram and six other spiritual tools help you to stay calm, kind, and focused throughout the day. This book shows how, with regular practice, you gain wisdom and vitality, and find a life that fulfills.
This fourth edition of Passage Meditation has been extended by over thirty percent to include Easwaran’s answers to more than 100 questions posed by his students in question and answer sessions. It gives all the instruction needed to establish a vibrant meditation practice and keep it going.

Somehow after years of reading Easwaran’s unmatched translations of the Upanishads and the Gita, I found his work on Meditation. Having practiced another form of meditation since the early ’70s, it was a significant decision to try passage meditation. A little over a year later, my only regret is that I didn’t learn this in the early ’70s! Transformational! You become what you meditate upon. You can be the change you want to see in the world. Unequivocal endorsement. Must get the companion anthology of passages from all the world’s spiritual traditions “God Makes the Rivers to Flow” Tat tvam asi…

The 2016 edition of this wonderful book adds 30% new content! The new content is in the form of questions and answers that will help many take meditation and the other points more deeply into their lives. For example, the first question is “There are so many methods of meditation today that I get confused. Could you explain what you understand by meditation? The response is well thought out and gives the reader a great overview of the many approaches to meditation. I’ve been meditating with Passage Meditation for many years and these questions have come up many times. I’ve never seen such great responses all in one place

Desire to change your life? Want to become a more spiritual person? Consider reading this fascinating book and putting some of its recommendations into practice. Passage Meditation lays out Easwaran’s eight point program on how to meditate. The author suggests that to become enlightened, we need to focus on inspired texts and passages. You can select passages within your own religious tradition, learn from traditions different than your own, or choose something non religious if that is your fancy. The key is selecting a mantra or passage for oneself (such as the prayer of St. Francis) and then repeating it slowly, and letting the passage change your life. I love the simply practicality and grace with which Easwaran writes. His several works are brilliant, counter cultural, and he invites us to slow down our lives, and be mindful of the books we read and the movies we watch. It brings to mind a phrase I once heard; thoughts lead to actions, actions lead to behavior, behaviors lead to character, character leads to destiny. Highly recommended. You will not be disappointed.
My Go-To Meditation Book — it’s what I recommend to friends.

This is my go-to meditation book. I first read it over ten years ago and have worked to implement the practice in my life since then. What is unique about this book is that it lays out an eight-point program of which mediation is one point. Each of the other seven points support the meditation practice and help bring the benefits into all aspects of your life. This approach, when embraced, will impact you mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I highly recommend the writings of Eknath Easwaran.
Many Good Points

Having read two other books by Eknath Easwaran; “Seeing With the Eyes of Love” and “Words to Live By” I would rate this book third. There were some very good points, especially about not rushing your practice at first but limiting your meditation time to no more than half hour, and the importance of the mantram. When he writes about saying your mantram prior to stressful situations (like surgery) I found it to be very valuable. The author convinced me of the importance of memorization of favorite prayers, Psalms, and other spiritual materials. For those with a Christian background a book I discovered years ago, “The Light Within” by Laurence Freeman has become my mini- bible. I’ve read it over and over again. Hope this review is helpful to other seekers out there. We are all on the same journey.
Spiritual training at its Finest

There are books that can change your life profoundly forever. This is one that is a simple and easy to understand introduction to meditation practices, but one that you will find yourself drawn to repeatedly over time and be continuingly amazed at the pragmatic depths of wisdom gracing its pages. Written by one of the finest spiritual minds of our age, Easwaran distills millennia of eastern religion and philosophy into a disarmingly simple, but provocative spiritual teaching for western readers. His articulate grasp of human emotion and ability to teach mind training through his breakthrough tool of passage meditation are superb. An outstanding work recommended without reservation.

i am a bit of a fan of the writings and treatments of yoga by eknath, so heads up. this is a form of perceiving and practicing meditation according to mr. easwaran school of yoga. if you have not been successful at mediation you might find this useful. as a lng time teacher and practicioner of yoga i like this book and am glad to have it on my shelf.
I’m very partial to Eknath Easwaran and simply love the book. Meditation and mantram help in progressing towards a happier life, for one and for all. Besides describing in simple words passage meditation, he provides an interesting Q&A for beginners and more advance meditators.
