Driven by the desire to help her three-year-old daughter settle down into a peaceful night's sleep, Maureen Garth devised meditations that would help her daughter feel secure and cared for. Starbright is a collection of the stories Garth created as her child grew older. These innovative meditations are simple visualizations parents and teachers can read to their children to help them sleep, develop concentration, awaken creativity, and learn to quiet themselves.

"Unfortunately, a lot of children have trouble learning these techniques by the time they are seven or eight," writes Garth. "Relaxation and visualization, if taught at an earlier age, could enhance not only children's school work but other areas of their lives. Their concentration would improve; their artistic abilities would develop; they would feel more centered; their daydreaming could not only bring joy, but be constructive."

In her engaging, warm, and personal style, Garth teaches parents how to help their children relax, concentrate, and develop artistic and mental abilities, as well as enjoy a good night's sleep.

I love this book. Better yet my 3 1/2 year old loves it too. When I first introduced the idea of meditating before a nap he was a bit resistant. I explained to him that it would help him relax for sleep and not be so keyed up which doesn’t allow him to sleep. Eventually (later that night) he decided that he wanted to try it out. And then he began to request it before bed every night for the last week.

My favorite children’s book without pictures!

I am a mental health counselor for children and families and I love this book soo much! I have used it in sessions with clients (even some adults with a few alterations to the stories). These stories are the equivalent of guided imagery for children. When parents and caregivers read these stories to their children they nurture their relationship and teach self-soothing and emotional-regulation skills. The stories are beautiful and encourage children to build deep and meaningful connections to nature. I have given this book as a gift to many parents of young children and I use it often with my clients.

Enchanted book.

Guess my parents were good ol hippies. I remember this book from when i was a child and gotta say, really unforgetable memories of peace and tranquility. It really is an enchanted book that takes one through a beautiful mystical journey fitted to the person/personality.

Nice book for wee peeps

I read it to some PreK kids and it made them sleepy. I changed the words “guardian angel’ to “your magical protector” so as snot to subscribe to any one certain religion. Kids with deeper-level thinking from ages 4-7 could benefit from this visualization experience. But visualization is really all that I see that it is.

This has been one of my favorite books since I was a young girl

This has been one of my favorite books since I was a young girl. My Aunt bought it for me 25 years ago and I lost it over time… I remembered it when she passed away and purchased it myself to read to my daughter. The book’s meditations are calming, soothing, and imaginative.

This has become a nightly part of our bedtime routine. They are short enough to keep our 3 1/2 year old interested and yet long enough to calm him down. We love that there are no pictures so there is no need for us to be on the bed with him, giving him the space to relax without us cuddling him.

Absolutely precious

This book is absolutely wonderful for children or adults. I wish someone had read this to me as a child. (I wish someone would read it to me now!) The meditations are colorful and very sensory-involving beautiful poetry/visualizations that are accessible to people of all ages. There is something very psychologically healing about these words and I have contemplated using them with my mental health clients.

Really lovely and calming visualization exercises for children. We are doing them with our 3 yr old and she loves them! It is great for when we are too tired to think of our own AND it has inspired us to make up our own. We like some from the book more than others, but we just skip the ones we don’t like so much.
